The Department of General Surgery comprises six subspecialties: the Breast Tumor Center, Hepatobiliary Surgery, Biliary and Pancreatic Surgery, Gastrointestinal Surgery, Vascular Surgery, and Thyroid Surgery. Additionally, it includes a General Surgery Intensive Care Unit (SICU), two laboratories, a clinical tissue specimen bank, a follow-up office, and the editorial department of the Lingnan Modern Clinics in Surgery journal. Academician Song Erwei and Professor Wang Jie serve as the discipline leaders, with Professor Chen Yajin as the department director, and Professors Li Wenbin and Nie Yan as deputy directors.
The Department of General Surgery is a National Clinical Key Specialty and one of the largest and most comprehensive departments of its kind in South China, ranking second in the 2018 Fudan Edition Best Hospital Specialties Ranking for South China. It is also the designated unit for the incoming chairperson of the Breast Cancer Committee of the Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology, and holds vice-chair positions in committees such as the Breast Cancer Committee of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association and the Breast Surgery and Liver Surgery Committees of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association. Furthermore, it serves as the Asia-Pacific Hepatobiliary Surgery Training Center (the only one in South China) and is a key continuing education base in South China, driving advancements in medical care in related fields across the region and nationwide.

Featured Medical Technology

The department currently operates over 400 open beds, handles more than 100,000 outpatient visits annually, admits over 20,000 inpatients each year, and performs nearly 20,000 surgeries. Specializing in precision surgical treatment for tumors of the breast, hepatobiliary-pancreatic system, gastrointestinal tract, and thyroid, the department has consistently maintained a breast-conserving surgery rate for breast cancer exceeding 50%, with a five-year survival rate of 91.8%, positioning it at the forefront nationally. It is the only department in South China capable of performing a full range of highly complex minimally invasive surgeries for digestive system tumors. In recent years, the introduction of the globally advanced Da Vinci robotic surgical system has further advanced the minimally invasive approach for complex procedures. The department's clinical expertise, particularly in minimally invasive techniques, is internationally advanced and domestically leading, establishing it as the largest center for challenging digestive system tumor diagnosis and treatment in South China and one of the three most renowned minimally invasive hepatobiliary-pancreatic surgery centers in China. In 2019, the department regained its accreditation for liver transplantation, and under the leadership of Vice President Liu Chao, all liver transplants performed have achieved advanced standards within the province.

Scientific Research Results

In terms of discipline development, all subspecialties are progressing vigorously with distinct characteristics. Significant achievements have also been made in talent cultivation. The department currently has over 130 physicians, including more than 50 doctoral and master's supervisors. Discipline leader Professor Song Erwei was selected into the first batch of the Central Organization Department's Talent Program and was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In recent years, the department has published over 200 SCI papers, including in top-tier journals in the field such as Nature Reviews Drug Discovery, Cell, Cancer Cell, Gut, and Hepatology. It has secured more than 100 research projects, including the National Natural Science Foundation Innovation Research Group Project and major/key projects from the National Natural Science Foundation, with total funding exceeding 100 million RMB. In 2015, the department was awarded the Second Prize of the National Natural Science Award.
