Featured Medical Technology

The Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery serves as a major diagnosis and treatment center for complex hepatopancreatobiliary diseases in South China. Guided by the principle of precision and characterized by minimally invasive techniques, it is a leading explorer and promoter of standardized procedures in China's minimally invasive hepatopancreatobiliary surgery. In 2013, the department performed Asia's first laparoscopic-assisted portal vein ligation combined with staged hepatectomy (ALPPS) for hepatocellular carcinoma. Utilizing ALPPS technology, the three-year survival rate for intermediate to advanced liver cancer has been increased to 55%. The department pioneered the standardization and proceduralization of laparoscopic right hemihepatectomy, right posterior sectionectomy, and segment 7 resection both domestically and internationally. As a primary training base for laparoscopic liver surgery in China, it has trained nearly a thousand surgeons over the past five years, including participants from Taiwan. It was also one of the earliest units in South China to perform laparoscopic pancreatoduodenectomy and the first in China to complete all types of laparoscopic pancreatic surgeries. Additionally, the department excels in the multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment of complex hepatopancreatobiliary tumors and in biliary tract injury repair. Over the past decade, the "Lingnan International Summit Forum on Minimally Invasive Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery," founded by the department, has become a renowned academic exchange platform both domestically and internationally. In 2019, leveraging the IHPA China Chapter ERAS Committee and the Hubei Chen Xiaoping Science and Technology Development Foundation, the department initiated and promoted the establishment and certification of national-level ERAS standard wards in hepatobiliary surgery, contributing to the advancement of ERAS practices in China.

Scientific Research Results

The department is responsible for undergraduate medical teaching and clinical practice instruction at Sun Yat-sen University and is authorized to confer Master's and Doctoral degrees, as well as host postdoctoral researchers. It has also consistently undertaken national continuing medical education programs, training over 600 participants annually. The department places high importance on professional academic exchange, hosting the Lingnan International Summit Forum on Minimally Invasive Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery for ten consecutive years, providing a platform for academic interaction among hepatobiliary surgery professionals worldwide.
The department has accumulated extensive research experience in both the clinical treatment of hepatobiliary tumors and basic research into their pathogenesis. In recent years, its clinical and basic research projects have received funding from national initiatives such as the 863 Program, the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" science and technology projects, and over twenty National Natural Science Foundation grants. The department also leads two "5010" clinical research projects of Sun Yat-sen University. It has published more than 100 SCI-indexed papers in renowned medical journals such as Hepatology, Gut, and Clinical Cancer Research.
