The Cardiology Department at Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital,Sun Yat-sen University was established in 1958. It has master and doctor degree program, post-doctoral research station and it is also the subcenter of the National Radiology and Therapeutic Clinical Medicine Research Center, the National Health Commission training base for arrhythmia and coronary intervention, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Electrophysiology and Arrhythmia, the clinical trial base for cardiovascular medicine. Besides, it is the training bases of cardiovascular specialists, China technical engineering staff for arrhythmia interventional diagnosis and treatment, and Guangdongprovincial cardiovascular medicine specialist nurses. The department is also assigned as the China Chest Pain Center, China Atrial Fibrillation Center, China Heart Failure Center, and China Cardiogenic Stroke Prevention and Treatment Base.

The department consists of 3 wards, 2 cardiac intensive care units, 3 cardiac catheter labs (1hybrid operating lab). It is currently staffed with 65 medical care personnel, including 11 professors, 15 associate professors, and 39 physicians. Among them, there are 2 professors honored as the first Famous Doctors of Sun Yat-sen University, 1 professor awarded special allowance from the State Council, 42 doctoral degree holders, 36 Ph.D/M.D tutors, 6 arrhythmia interventional training tutors, and 6 coronary interventional training tutors. The annual number of outpatient visits is over 160,000, hospital admissions over 6,000 and cardiac intervention therapy cases over 5,000.

There are 5 subspecialties, including coronary heart diseases ubspecialty, hypertension subspecialty, arrhythmia subspecialty, heart failure subspecialty, and cardiovascular diagnosis subspecialty, and 2 platforms, including cardiac catheter lab and electrophysiology and arrhythmia lab. Cardiovascular Hospital of Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital is scheduled to construct. The cardiology department is skilled in the diagnosis and treatment of both common and critical cardiovascular diseases. The department leads others in China in various cardiovascular interventional operations with high success rates, remarkable curative effects, and few complications, including permanent cardiac pacemakers, implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD), cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT),cardiac resynchronization therapy-defibrillator(CRTD), His bundle pacing, permanent cardiac pacing electrode removal, complex coronary interventions, arrhythmia ablation treatment, transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), aortic endovascular exclusion, and congenital heart disease occlusion. The Department of Cardiology has successfully assisted the Department of Cardiac Surgery in heart transplantation operations. It is also the first center in China to conduct multidisciplinary collaboration (MDT) consultations for complicated cardiovascular diseases.

Scientific Research Results

In recent years,the department assumed 41projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, including 2 Cultivation Projects of Major Research Plan and 1 Projectof Outstanding Youth. The department has also obtained about 220 other projects, such asclinical key project of the Health and Family Planning Commission, the New Century Talent Support Program of the Ministry of Education, Doctoral Fund of the Ministry of Education, Guangdong Natural Science Fund Projects, and Guangdong Science and Technology Plan, with a total fund of more than 92 million yuan. Over 210 SCI research articles have been published, and 3 provincial and ministerial-level science and technology progress awards have been acquired.
