Department of Gastroenterology
Department of Gastroenterology

The Department of Gastroenterology was founded in 1954 by Professor Chen Guozhen, one of the pioneers of gastroenterology in China, making it one of the earliest specialized gastroenterology departments established in the country. It boasts a strong medical and academic team, currently consisting of 11 professors/chief physicians, 6 associate professors/associate chief physicians, 6 attending physicians, and 1 associate chief technologist.
The Department of Gastroenterology is one of China's first institutions authorized to confer Master's degrees, Doctoral degrees, and host postdoctoral researchers. It is a Guangdong Provincial Clinical Key Specialty, holds a standing committee membership in the Chinese Society of Gastroenterology of the Chinese Medical Association, serves as the former chair unit of the Guangdong Society of Gastroenterology, and is the current chair unit of the Guangdong Society of Digestive Endoscopy. In recent years, the department's research achievements have been honored with 2 provincial-level or higher Science and Technology Progress Awards. Our research projects have received over 40 grants from organizations including the former State Science and Technology Commission, the Ministry of Health, and the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Commission, among which 20 are National Natural Science Foundation of China grants. Faculty members have served as chief editors for 5 academic monographs published by the People's Medical Publishing House and others, and as deputy editors for 6 monographs. Over the past five years, the department has published more than 70 SCI-indexed papers and over 100 papers in core Chinese journals. We have organized more than 20 provincial-level or higher academic conferences and continuing medical education programs, wielding significant influence both domestically and internationally.
Clinically, the department pioneered several diagnostic and therapeutic techniques in China, such as splenic sinus manometry and splenic-pulmonary circulation time measurement. Currently, we perform a wide range of procedures under both routine and anesthetized endoscopy. These include various endoscopic hemostasis techniques, endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) and endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for mucosal and submucosal lesions, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) with stone extraction and biliary/pancreatic stent placement, dilation and stenting for gastrointestinal strictures, percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG), endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), and capsule endoscopy.
The department currently operates 80 inpatient beds. We handle an annual outpatient volume of approximately 100,000 visits and admit over 4,500 inpatients per year. We maintain a high standard of diagnosis and treatment for various digestive diseases, including peptic ulcer disease, gastrointestinal bleeding, liver cirrhosis, hepatitis, acute pancreatitis, functional gastrointestinal disorders, inflammatory bowel disease, and digestive system tumors. Among these, the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic pancreatitis, inflammatory bowel disease, and drug-induced liver injury represent particular subspecialty strengths of our department.

Featured Medical Technology

We focus on the diagnosis and treatment of complex and critical digestive diseases, with an emphasis on minimally invasive endoscopic interventions as the cornerstone of our approach.
(1) Comprehensive Diagnosis and Treatment of Pancreatic Diseases: As the vice-chair unit of the Pancreatic Disease Group under the Chinese Society of Gastroenterology, we have led and participated in the formulation of multiple clinical guidelines. Our research on pancreatic diseases holds significant influence nationally.
(2) Clinical Research on Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Radiation Enteritis: Our department has established a specialized clinic for inflammatory bowel disease, which has gained notable recognition in China. We actively explore new immunotherapies and implement advanced endoscopic treatment techniques.
(3) Comprehensive Treatment of Drug-Induced Liver Disease: Our department has accumulated substantial clinical experience in managing drug-induced liver injury.
(4) Advanced Digestive Endoscopic Diagnosis and Treatment Techniques: We employ the latest endoscopic techniques for diagnosing and treating various digestive diseases.

Scientific Research Results

Research Features:
(1) Basic and Clinical Research on Pancreatic Cancer and Pancreatitis: Pancreatic diseases are a key strength of our department. We have previously received provincial/ministerial-level Science and Technology Progress Awards for related work and have established a solid foundation in both clinical and basic research on pancreatitis.
(2) Intestinal Mucosal Injury and Repair: Our research in this area encompasses inflammatory bowel disease, the intestinal barrier function in diabetes, and the interplay between gut microbiota and immunity.
(3) Nanotechnology for Tumor Diagnosis and Treatment: Our department has achieved promising results in applying nanotechnology to tumor diagnosis and treatment. We aim to intensify research efforts in this field and strive to translate these findings into clinical diagnostic and therapeutic technologies.
Teaching Features:
We oversee a comprehensive series of training programs covering undergraduates, resident physicians, master's candidates, doctoral candidates, and postdoctoral fellows, with consistently positive teaching outcomes. Faculty members from our department have won multiple teaching awards in competitions organized by the university and the hospital and have published numerous educational research papers.
