Departments & Centers Reproductive Medicine Center of Sun Yan-sen Memorial Hospital

The center for reproductive medicine of Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital was established in 2001. It is now a National Key Clinical Department, a Key Medical Department of 12th “Five-year Plan” of Guangdong province, and a Key Clinical Department in Guangdong.

As its beginnings in the very early years, for the past 50 years, our center has pushed the boundaries of building up the reproductive endocrinological medical team and laboratory in China, as well as conducting research on the reproductive endocrinological diseases and infertility. In 1980s, our center performed the first hysteroscopic and laparoscopic surgery and fallopian tube implantation surgery. In the mid-1980s, our center also performed the first case of intrauterine insemination with fresh or frozen sperms in our country.

With 85 leading staff, including doctors, nurses, and technicians, all of whom have a well established reputation in the field. 13 are advanced professionals and more than 70% doctors have doctoral degree. The staff are serving over 90 positions in the academic organizations of reproductive endocrinology, including 6 associate chairmen in national academies, 2 associate editors of national journals, 4 chairmen and 15 associate chairmen in provincial academies. 

The routine assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) we have performed are artificial insemination with husband’s sperm (AIH), in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer (IVF-ET), intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), and preimplantation genetic test (PGT). The annual outpatient volume is approximately 100,000 times, and IVF/ICSI is conducted around 4000 cycles per year. Our clinical pregnancy rate of fresh cycle has reached the advanced level in China. We have provided high-quality medical service to patients at home and abroad.

Featured Medical Technology

Since the center was established, we have built up the diagnostic and therapeutic standards for reproductive endocrinological diseases and infertility. In addition to ART technologies, our center also ranks at the top levels in the diagnosis and treatment of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), fertility protection (FP), diminished ovarian reserve (DOR), etc.
Across the world, we are the first center to set up the diagnostic standard of PCOS and hyperandrogenism in Chinese patients. We are also the first to implement the androgen categorized measurement, pioneer the conduct of the metabolic screen in PCOS patients, and establish the early diagnostic and intervening criteria for adolescent PCOS patients. Since 2002, we have launched the research on female FP. For the first time, we have successfully applied the optimized vitrification to solid surface to preserve human ovarian tissue. To date, we can offer the advanced FP technologies to a variety of tumor patients, such as breast cancer, endometrial carcinoma, cervical carcinoma, etc.
In recent decade, we strive to optimize the ART protocol so as to make the treatment individualized and accurate, such as individualized pituitary desensitization protocol, optimized endometriosis therapeutic protocol, and comprehensive therapeutic protocol for recurrent implantation failures and miscarriages. We have acquired a pregnancy rate of 50% in embryo transferred patients with premature ovarian insufficiency (POI). With the robust development of reproductive genetics, we have achieved successful pregnancy in several complicated genetic diseases, such as congenital adrenal hyperplasia, and ovarian resistant syndrome.

Scientific Research Results

The balanced development in clinical, teaching and research fields has been the key concept of our discipline construction, which provides enormous vigor and energy to promote our continuous progress. In total, our research achievements have been displayed in the publication of nearly 100 SCI papers, 300 Chinese papers, in addition to the editor-in-chiefs of 5 academic books and co-authors of 20 academic books. Some of the books have been cited by European and American reproductive societies.
Due to our academic achievements, we were rewarded with a lot of prizes, such as Educational Department Scientific Prize, Guangdong Province Scientific Prize, Huaxia Scientific Prize, Guangdong Province Progress Prize of Aristogenesis and Stirpiculture, etc. We have been supported by more than 50 national and provincial grants, with the total amount over 10 million RMBs.
Our staff were frequently invited as the guest speakers at international conferences. We have chaired a bunch of international, national, and provincial conferences. Especially, we have hosted a national conference of continuing medical education for 18 years, which attracted more than ten thousand of peers to attend the meeting and visit our center. By recruiting a certain number of visiting scholars, post-graduate students and post doctors, we have cultivated a large group of reproductive professionals for the nation and its adjacent countries.
