Division of Pediatric Hematology
Division of Pediatric Hematology

The Division of Pediatric Hematology of SYSMH was among the first institutions in Guangdong Province authorized to confer master's and doctoral degrees in pediatrics. The Department of Pediatrics was designated as a provincial key discipline by the Guangdong Provincial Department of Education, and its Pediatric Hematology subspecialty (focusing on Thalassemia) was approved as a National Clinical Key Specialty. In 2013, it was again recognized as a "Guangdong Provincial Clinical Key Specialty" by the Guangdong Provincial Health and Family Planning Commission.
The Division of Pediatric Hematology currently operates 73 fixed beds, comprising the Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Ward (Pediatric Ward 1), the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), and the Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation Ward (Pediatric Ward 5). It also houses the Pediatric Hematology Research Laboratory, as well as specialized outpatient clinics for pediatric hematology, thalassemia, and solid tumors. The department employs 45 professional medical, educational, and research personnel in pediatric hematology, including 4 Professors/Chief Physicians and 3 Associate Professors/Associate Chief Physicians; 3 doctoral supervisors and 5 master's supervisors. Professor Fang Jianpei is a member of the Pediatrics Society of the Chinese Medical Association, Chair of the Committee for Primary Care Pediatrics Development, Vice-Chair of the Preparatory Group for Pediatric Oncology, and Vice-Chair of the National Health Commission's Expert Committee on Childhood Leukemia. In 2019, he was recognized as a "Chinese Outstanding Pediatrician" and previously served as Chair of the Pediatrics Society of the Guangdong Medical Association. He served as chief editor of the 4th edition of the "13th Five-Year Plan" textbook Pediatrics (2018, specialist level) published by People's Medical Publishing House and contributed to the 9th edition of the "11th Five-Year Plan" textbook Pediatrics (undergraduate level) and the 3rd edition of the "12th Five-Year Plan" textbook Pediatrics (for 8-year/7-year programs).

Featured Medical Technology

The Division of Pediatric Hematology has accumulated extensive clinical experience in diagnosing and treating thalassemia, childhood leukemia, aplastic anemia, immune thrombocytopenic purpura, lymphoma, neuroblastoma, and in performing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). In 1998, it performed China's first sibling cord blood transplant for severe β-thalassemia, and in 2000, it conducted the world's first unrelated cord blood transplant for severe β-thalassemia. To date, the department has completed over 500 HSCT procedures for various diseases, including nearly 200 for thalassemia. It holds a high level of expertise in treating thalassemia within the field of pediatric hematology in China, with treatment success rates and disease-free survival reaching internationally advanced levels. The department served as the lead unit for the "Guangzhou Children's Leukemia Chemotherapy Cooperative Group" (established 2002), the "Guangdong Provincial Children's Leukemia Chemotherapy Cooperative Group" (2008), and the "South China Children's Leukemia Chemotherapy Cooperative Group" (2016), conducting multicenter prospective clinical research on leukemia chemotherapy protocols. The 5-year cure rate for childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia with chemotherapy reaches 85-90%, achieving internationally advanced standards. The department has established excellent cooperative relationships with institutions such as Duke University, Harvard Children's Hospital, Hôpital Saint-Louis in France, Prince of Wales Hospital of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Queen Mary Hospital of The University of Hong Kong.
