The Department of Stomatology of Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital that established in the early 1950s, has become the most powerful clinical, teaching and scientific research base of stomatology in South China through the unremitting efforts of several generations of stomatology experts. At present, there are 150 general practitioners, nurses and technicians, including 8 professors, 18 associate professors and 26 attending physicians. Most of the doctors have doctor's degrees, and the talent team is reasonable. It has a complete range of subspecialties, including Dept. of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Dept. of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics, Dept. of Periodontology, Dept. of Oral Mucosal Disease, Dept. of Pediatric Dentistry, Dept. of Prosthodontics, Dept. of Orthodontics, and Dept. of Oral Implantology. There are more than 60 dental units in the hospital headquarters, the southern campus and campus in Zengcheng district, as well as 80 hospital beds in the ward. The annual outpatients and emergency services are nearly 100000 person-times, the annual inpatients are nearly 4000 persons, and the annual operations are more than 3000.
The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is at the forefront in China in the comprehensive treatment of oral and maxillofacial-head and neck tumors and the functional reconstruction of large soft and hard tissue defects, and some of the technologies are at the international leading level. There are many innovations in the surgical treatment of radionecrosis of jaws, and the curative effect is remarkable, which is in the international leading level; The reconstruction of congenital and acquired cranial and maxillofacial deformities has also reached the domestic advanced level. The medical business volume ranks the first in the stomatology department of the provincial general hospital, and the medical level is in the leading position in South China.
The Department of Stomatology, which began to recruit postgraduate students in the 1980s and doctoral students in the 1990s, has trained 12 postdoctoral students, more than 50 doctoral students, more than 100 master's students, more than 500 undergraduate interns and more than 300 doctors for further study so far. It has trained more than 2000 oral and maxillofacial surgery professionals all over the country through holding the national class of continuing medical education. The Department of Stomatology is a national standard training base for general practitioners of stomatology and specialized doctors of oral and maxillofacial surgery.
With a strong scientific research capacity, the Department of Stomatologyhas obtained more than 100 scientific research funds at all levels in recent years, which includes more than 30 National Natural Science Foundation. More than 300 SCI papers were published in foreign medical journals, including over 20 high-level research papers published in the international famous oncology journal, such as Clinical Cancer Research, Cancer Research, Oncogene, British Journal of Cancer, Molecular Cancer, Cancer Letters, International Journal of Cancer, Head & Neck. The department also has won many science and technology awards from the Ministry of Education and Guangdong Province.
The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery was rated as a national key clinical specialty in 2012, and the Department of Stomatology was rated as a key clinical specialty in Guangdong Province in 2013, which was listed as the most powerful department in Guangdong Hospital in 2017.
