Department of Anesthesiology

The Department of Anesthesiology at our hospital was established in 1959 and is recognized as a Guangdong Provincial Clinical Key Specialty. It comprises dedicated units at both the Southern Campus and Northern Campus, with a total of 88 in-service anesthesiologists and 19 nurses. Among them, 6 hold senior professional titles and 15 hold associate senior titles; 61 possess master's degrees and 19 hold doctoral degrees; 13 physicians have studied at renowned overseas universities.
The department has established six specialized anesthesia subspecialties that reflect the hospital's strengths: Hepatobiliary Surgery Anesthesia, Urology and Gynecology Anesthesia, Cardiothoracic Surgery Anesthesia, Craniocerebral and Spinal Surgery Anesthesia, Oral and Otorhinolaryngology Anesthesia, and Pain Medicine. It provides comprehensive clinical services including clinical anesthesia, post-anesthesia recovery, postoperative pain management, critical care, pain clinic consultations, and anesthesia pre-operative assessments. Annually, the department performs nearly 40,000 anesthetic procedures for inpatients and administers over 20,000 cases of postoperative analgesia. It routinely provides anesthesia for cardiopulmonary, liver, and kidney transplant surgeries; cardiac and major vascular surgeries; Da Vinci robotic surgeries; various endoscopic and minimally invasive surgeries; awake craniotomy and navigation-assisted neurosurgical procedures; complex orthopedic surgeries; and high-risk airway surgeries for functional reconstruction in oral and maxillofacial surgery. The quality and efficacy of clinical anesthesia have reached a leading level within the province.
In addition to clinical duties, the Department of Anesthesiology actively responds to the national call for foreign medical aid by forming high-quality teams to provide targeted assistance to anesthesiology departments in African countries. Simultaneously, it earnestly supports the national initiative of "Focusing on Primary Care, Growing Together" by aiding primary-level hospital anesthesiology departments, effectively enhancing local clinical anesthesia standards and fulfilling its social responsibilities commendably.
In education, the department has 5 doctoral supervisors and 15 master's supervisors, having trained 10 doctoral students and 49 master's students over the past five years. While undertaking teaching responsibilities for undergraduate students, eight-year program students, and international students at Sun Yat-sen University, it also oversees the standardized clinical training of resident physicians, professional master's degree students, and visiting physicians. Furthermore, as the Vice Chair Unit of the Anesthesiology Branch of the Guangdong Medical Association and the Chair Unit of the Anesthesiology Branch of the Guangdong Anti-Cancer Association, the department is committed to promoting new concepts, knowledge, and techniques in anesthesiology, cultivating a large number of professionals for the field.
In scientific research, the department has developed several foundational and clinical research directions, including "Anesthesia and Postoperative Cognitive Dysfunction," "Neuroprotective and Neurotoxic Mechanisms of Inhalational Anesthetics," "Anesthesia and Neuroinflammation," "Anesthesia and Tumor Immunity," and "Nerve Blocks and Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS)." It has nurtured a group of academic leaders and后备队, forming a robust academic梯队 overall. In recent years, the department has secured 11 projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China and published 56 SCI-indexed papers, positioning its academic level at an advanced standing within the anesthesiology community of Guangdong Province.

The Department of Anesthesiology was established in 1959. It is recognized as a Guangdong Provincial Clinical Key Specialty, serves as the Vice Chair Unit of the Anesthesiology Branch of the Guangdong Medical Association, holds the positions of Honorary Chair and Chair of the Anesthesiology Committee of the Guangdong Medical Doctor Association, and is the Honorary Chair and Vice Chair Unit of the Anesthesiology Branch of the Guangdong Anti-Cancer Association. The department operates dedicated units at both the Southern Campus and Northern Campus. As of 2020, it has 94 in-service anesthesiologists and 32 nurses, including 6 with senior professional titles and 15 with associate senior titles. Among the physicians, 61 hold master's degrees, 19 hold doctoral degrees, and 15 have studied at renowned universities in the United States and Japan.
The department offers a comprehensive range of services, including clinical anesthesia, post-anesthesia recovery, postoperative pain management, critical care, pain clinic consultations, and anesthesia pre-operative assessments. Aligned with the hospital's specialized medical strengths, it has established six anesthesia subspecialties: Hepatobiliary Surgery Anesthesia, Urology and Gynecology Anesthesia, Cardiothoracic Surgery Anesthesia, Craniocerebral and Spinal Surgery Anesthesia, Oral and Otorhinolaryngology Anesthesia, and Pain Medicine, thereby achieving refined and specialized anesthesia care. Currently, the department operates 41 inpatient operating rooms and 9 outpatient operating rooms. It performs nearly 50,000 anesthetic procedures for inpatients annually and administers over 20,000 cases of postoperative analgesia each year. The department provides anesthesia for a wide range of complex and critical surgeries, including organ transplant anesthesia (heart, lung, liver, kidney), cardiac and major vascular surgery anesthesia, Da Vinci robotic surgery anesthesia (urology, cardiac, general surgery, head and neck), anesthesia for various endoscopic and minimally invasive surgeries (cardiac, hepatobiliary-pancreatic, neurosurgical, thoracic), awake craniotomy and navigation-assisted neurosurgical anesthesia, anesthesia for complex orthopedic surgeries (total vertebrectomy, total pelvic reconstruction, scoliosis correction, joint replacement in elderly patients), and high-risk airway anesthesia for functional reconstruction in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Both the volume and quality of anesthesia services are at a leading level in Guangdong Province.

Scientific Research Results

The Department of Anesthesiology is among the first institutions in China to offer undergraduate anesthesia education, the earliest postgraduate training base for anesthesia master's degrees in Guangdong Province, a doctoral training base at Sun Yat-sen University, and one of Guangdong's first "Standardized Residency Training Bases for Anesthesiology" (one of five). With robust teaching capabilities, the department currently has 5 doctoral supervisors and 15 master's supervisors. In recent years, it has trained 10 doctoral students and over 60 master's students. In addition to undertaking undergraduate, master's, and doctoral teaching responsibilities for Sun Yat-sen University Medical School, the department fulfills its role as a "National Standardized Residency Training Base" by providing standardized clinical training for young physicians. Simultaneously, it actively fulfills its social responsibilities by deploying core faculty members to support medical institutions in relatively underserved regions such as Tibet, Yunnan, and Guangxi, thereby enhancing the clinical anesthesia standards at local primary-level hospitals. Over the years, the department has cultivated a significant number of outstanding healthcare professionals for the nation.
In scientific research, the department has established a strong academic team, fostering a group of mid-career and young academic leaders capable of engaging in both clinical and basic research. The department has developed several foundational and clinical research directions, including "Anesthesia and Postoperative Cognitive Dysfunction," "Neuroprotective and Neurotoxic Mechanisms of Inhalational Anesthetics," "Anesthesia and Neuroinflammation," "Anesthesia and Tumor Immunity," and "Nerve Blocks and Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS)." In recent years, it has secured 12 projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 3 major special project grants, and other funding sources, with total funding exceeding 10 million RMB. The department has published over 70 SCI-indexed papers, achieving an advanced academic standing within the anesthesiology community of Guangdong Province.
