Department of Ultrasound Imaging
SurgeryDepartment of Ultrasound

The Ultrasound Department of SYSMH is one of the earliest departments in Guangdong Province to practice ultrasound medicine. Integrating medical services, teaching, and scientific research, it serves as a master's and doctoral degree-granting site in imaging medicine. Currently, it is recognized as a key clinical specialty in Guangdong Province, the chair unit of the Ultrasound Physician Branch of the Guangdong Medical Doctor Association and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Ultrasound Physicians Alliance, the training base for ultrasound discipline leaders in county-level hospitals in Guangdong Province, and the "Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound Training Base" and "Chinese Interventional Ultrasound Training Base" of the Ultrasound Physician Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association. It also functions as a "Remote Ultrasound Consultation Center."
The department has over 50 medical staff, including 3 chief physicians, 11 deputy chief physicians, 1 doctoral supervisor, and 10 master's supervisors. It consists of subspecialties such as abdominal, superficial organ, peripheral vascular, obstetrics and gynecology, and interventional ultrasound. Equipped with 41 color ultrasound machines of various types, the department conducts over 300,000 patient examinations annually.

Featured Medical Technology

The department pioneered the application research of breast elastography technology in China, organizing the country's first multicenter study on breast ultrasound elastography. It proposed a qualitative scoring standard for breast elastography suitable for Chinese women, and this achievement was awarded the Second Prize of Guangdong Provincial Scientific and Technological Achievement Award.
As one of the earliest institutions in China to perform cold-cycle radiofrequency ablation for liver tumors and contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS), it participated in the national multicenter research project "Standardized Application and Promotion of Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound," which received the Second Prize of the Ministry of Education's Scientific and Technological Achievement Award.
The department was also among the first in China to perform hysterosalpingo-contrast sonography (HyCoSy). It published the first domestic monograph on HyCoSy, which was awarded the Second Prize of Guangdong Provincial Scientific and Technological Achievement Award. The newly developed project "Real-time Three-dimensional Ultrasound Fluoroscopy for Fallopian Tube Patency Testing" has reached a nationally leading level. In 2007, it was designated as one of the first Prenatal Ultrasound Diagnosis Centers in Guangdong Province, and in 2009, it was appointed as the Guangzhou Congenital Heart Disease Ultrasound Screening Teacher Training Base.
Primary services provided by the department include:
(1) Routine ultrasound examinations for abdominal, thoracic, urological, superficial organ, peripheral vascular, and obstetrics/gynecology diseases;
(2) Application of new technologies such as ultrasound elastography and contrast-enhanced ultrasound;
(3) Ultrasound-guided puncture biopsies;
(4) Ultrasound-guided aspiration or drug injection therapy for various cysts, abscesses, and encapsulated effusions;
(5) Ultrasound-guided percutaneous contrast examinations, drainage, and drug injection therapies;
(6) Ultrasound-guided interventional therapy for malignant tumors, including intratumoral absolute alcohol injection, microwave ablation, radiofrequency ablation, laser ablation, and cryoablation;
(7) Prenatal fetal anomaly ultrasound screening, among other projects.

Scientific Research Results

1.Teaching Work: The department is responsible for teaching the course "Medical Imaging" to undergraduate students, 7-year master's program students, and 8-year doctoral program students in the Clinical Medicine major at Sun Yat-sen University. It also oversees the teaching, clinical observation, and internship training for undergraduate students majoring in Medical Imaging. To date, the department has supervised over 40 master’s students and more than 10 doctoral students. Annually, it accepts over 20 visiting trainees from across the country and, in strict accordance with the university’s standardized residency training program, undertakes the training of resident physicians.
2.Research Achievements: In recent years, the department has conducted in-depth research in areas such as breast elastography, radiofrequency ablation for liver cancer, and contrast-enhanced ultrasound for superficial organs. It has secured 10 National Natural Science Foundation grants, and the research findings have been published in prestigious journals, including Radiology.
