Pharmaceutical Department
Department of Pharmacy

The Department of Pharmacy is recognized as a Guangdong Provincial High-Level Clinical Key Specialty (Specialty Focus: Clinical Pharmacy). It serves as a large-scale medical technical department that integrates medical services, teaching, and scientific research, responsible for pharmaceutical management, pharmaceutical technical services, pharmaceutical discipline development, and talent cultivation across the hospital. The department comprises three subspecialties: Drug Procurement, Supply, and Dispensing; Pharmaceutical Preparation; and Clinical Pharmacy. Currently, the department employs 181 pharmaceutical technicians, including 13 senior professionals, 42 intermediate-level professionals, and 124 junior-level professionals. Among them, there is one master's supervisor, 3 doctoral graduates, 29 master's graduates, with over 80% of the staff holding a bachelor's degree or higher.
The Drug Procurement, Supply, and Dispensing Section is responsible for warehouses such as the Chinese Medicine Warehouse, Western Medicine Warehouse, and Infusion Warehouse, as well as departments including the Chinese and Western Medicine Outpatient Pharmacy, Inpatient Pharmacy, and Intravenous Admixture Center. It handles the procurement, storage, and distribution of medications, disinfectants, and chemical reagents for the entire hospital, along with pharmaceutical services such as prescription review, dispensing, medication counseling, consultation, and guidance. The Outpatient Pharmacy fully implemented information automation in March 2019, significantly reducing waiting times and enhancing convenience for patients. The Intravenous Admixture Center officially began operations in October 2015 and successfully passed third-party evaluation and acceptance. It currently manages the centralized preparation of intravenous medications for the entire hospital. With a scientific spatial layout, advanced automated equipment, standardized preparation processes, and professional pharmaceutical expertise, the center fully ensures the quality and safety of intravenous medication preparation for patients. Guided by the "patient-centered" philosophy, the Drug Procurement, Supply, and Dispensing Section continuously improves the quality of pharmaceutical services.
The Pharmaceutical Preparation Section is responsible for the research and development, application, preparation, therapeutic drug monitoring, and drug-related genetic testing of hospital preparations. It consists of the Preparation Laboratory and the Pharmaceutical Laboratory. Upholding the hospital's spirit of "inheritance and innovation," this section has preserved and advanced hospital preparations with a history of nearly half a century. Currently, the hospital holds approval for over 70 preparations, 26 of which are unique to our institution. These distinctive preparations are widely renowned for their remarkable clinical efficacy and minimal side effects, serving as a hallmark of the hospital. Additionally, with the hospital's support, a 2,000-square-meter preparation transformation center is under development, which will significantly enhance the hospital's production and research capabilities in preparations. Equipped with various advanced testing instruments, the Pharmaceutical Laboratory operates three major platforms: the Preparation Quality Control Platform, the Individualized Drug Therapy Monitoring Platform, and the Scientific Research Laboratory Platform. Currently, it offers over 40 therapeutic drug monitoring and drug-related genetic testing projects. In 2018, it was honored as a demonstration unit for the "Precision Medical Integration Application Demonstration System Construction."
The Clinical Pharmacy Section serves as a national training base for clinical pharmacists. It engages in activities such as pharmacist ward rounds, individualized medication regimen design, pharmaceutical consultations, pharmacist clinics, prescription reviews, drug counseling, adverse drug reaction reporting, evidence-based pharmacy, and clinical drug research. Actively fulfilling various antimicrobial stewardship monitoring tasks, it has significantly contributed to improving the overall level of rational drug use in clinical practice. The section spearheaded the establishment of the "Yixian Pharmaceutical Alliance," signing collaborative agreements with over 30 primary healthcare institutions to help elevate the quality of pharmaceutical services at the grassroots level. It also actively implements a comprehensive online and offline pharmacy service model to provide pharmaceutical counseling to patients. Furthermore, the section vigorously promotes pharmaceutical science education, organizes pharmaceutical volunteer activities to disseminate knowledge on rational medication use, and has created multiple new media platforms for pharmaceutical communication, including the "Yixian Pharmacist" account on Toutiao. By publishing numerous original pharmaceutical science articles, it fully demonstrates the professional and social value of clinical pharmacists.
"Safe and Rational Medication, Pharmacists Walk with You!" The Department of Pharmacy at Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University, is committed to continuously enhancing its professional pharmaceutical expertise, optimizing workflow strategies, and actively expanding the scope of pharmaceutical services. With a rigorous, practical, and enthusiastic approach, it strives to provide high-quality pharmaceutical services to patients and healthcare professionals alike.

Featured Medical Technology

The Department of Pharmacy of SYSMH upholds a "patient-centered" approach and actively delivers specialized clinical pharmacy services while ensuring the hospital's overall drug supply. Its key initiatives include:
I. Providing Personalized Medication Services Through Precision Pharmacy Technology
By integrating therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) and pharmacogenomic testing into clinical pharmacy practice, the department has established a closed-loop system linking pharmacy services with clinical care. This enables TDM for patients and supports clinicians in developing individualized medication regimens.
II. Delivering Safe, Effective, and Rational Medication Services Supported by Evidence-Based Pharmacy
Using evidence-based methods such as literature review and drug evaluations, the department provides rational medication recommendations to clinical teams. It also conducts appropriateness assessments for off-label drug use to mitigate risks for patients and healthcare professionals, further enhancing the quality of medical services at our hospital. Notably, the department initiated a nationwide collection of common off-label drug usage practices in clinical settings and, through evidence-based evaluation, compiled six editions of the Off-Label Drug Use Directory, which have been published by the Guangdong Pharmacological Society.
III. Operating Pharmacy Clinics for Patient Education and Chronic Disease Management
Centered on medication education and management for patients with chronic diseases, the pharmacy clinics offer services including medication counseling, follow-up management, interpretation of relevant test reports, medication consultations, education, and adjustment recommendations. These efforts improve patient medication adherence, reduce the incidence of adverse drug reactions, and promote safe and rational drug use. Currently, the department runs four collaborative (physician-pharmacist) clinics and two independent pharmacy clinics.
