In order to implement the national innovation-driven development strategy and align with the hospital's goal of building a "research-oriented hospital with Chinese characteristics and world-class standards," SYSMH officially established the Medical-Engineering Integration Research Center in January 2020. The center comprises two specialized platforms: the Medical Device Research and Development Department and the Biomaterials and 3D Printing Department.
Guided by the principle of "leveraging complementary strengths, sharing resources, and pursuing collaborative development," the center relies on the hospital's clinical departments and external strategic partners. It has established a collaborative innovation system that closely integrates advanced medical applications with engineering disciplines through partnerships with institutions such as Bio-island Laboratory, the science and engineering faculties of Sun Yat-sen University, and various clinical departments. The center is committed to building a technology cooperation platform that fosters synergy, collaborative innovation, and mutual success. By leveraging complementary resources from strategic partners, it aims to establish a high-level technological innovation platform for medical-engineering integration. Through flexible and diversified talent recruitment mechanisms, the center brings together leading scientists and teams from both domestic and international backgrounds. With a full-chain layout encompassing application and development, it constructs a technological innovation system covering key technology breakthroughs for innovative medical products, medical product development, and the transformation of medical achievements. Simultaneously, the center continuously innovates the development model of medical-engineering integration, comprehensively explores cutting-edge interdisciplinary innovations in medical engineering both domestically and internationally, and shares the latest advancements, trends, and experiences in hospital management and reform in the context of the new era of smart healthcare. It strives to build a clinical research and translational application service platform supported by modern science and technology.
Centered on the theme of "Medical-Engineering Integration: Stepping into the New Era of Smart Healthcare," the Medical-Engineering Integration Research Center focuses on key R&D areas and cutting-edge technologies such as smart medical devices, 3D printing, tissue engineering biomaterials, precision diagnostic kits, organoids, and digital twin technology. In 2021, the center was approved as the Guangdong Provincial Medical Products Administration Key Laboratory – Smart Medical Device Research and Evaluation Key Laboratory. This key laboratory collaborates with the Guangdong Medical Device Quality Supervision and Inspection Institute to build a platform for the testing and evaluation of smart medical devices. Since its establishment, the center has been dedicated to advancing the development plan for medical-engineering integration at our hospital. It has formulated management systems such as the "Management Measures for Medical Device R&D Projects of Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University" and the "Management Measures for Biomaterials and 3D Printing R&D Projects of Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University," further promoting the establishment of a management system for medical-engineering integration research at our hospital. The center has also actively initiated the construction of a medical-engineering integration laboratory, with the basic framework now largely completed. Additionally, the center focuses on the management of medical-engineering research projects and the transformation of achievements. It has established the Yixian Medical-Engineering Integration Special Fund, which incubates five projects annually, each funded with 200,000 RMB. Through hospital-wide selection, 20 medical-engineering integration projects have been approved to date. The center places high importance on cultivating interdisciplinary talents in medical-engineering integration and providing training related to medical-engineering research and management policies. It has organized specialized training sessions and academic salons such as "Development of Intelligent Wearable Cardiopulmonary Signal Detectors," "Biomaterials and 3D Printing," the "Yixian International Cardiovascular Disease Forum," and the "Yixian Medical-Engineering Integration and Innovation Transformation Online Forum." The center also assists the Discipline Development and Planning Department in conducting hospital-wide outreach sessions on achievement transformation and engages in face-to-face communication and exchange with medical staff from 44 clinical and technical departments across the hospital. This enables a thorough understanding of the current status and needs of medical research and achievement transformation in each department, significantly promoting interdisciplinary collaboration, enhancing the overall research capabilities of scientific personnel, broadening research perspectives, and advancing the standardized development of medical-engineering integration research at our hospital.
The center will continue to strengthen its development, aiming to become a base for the engineering, integration, and industrialization of major scientific and technological achievements in the medical-engineering integration industry. It will serve as a hub, diffusion source, and transformation platform for key common technologies in the industry, building a high-level, full-chain industry-academia-research medical-engineering integration R&D platform. This will enhance the efficiency of healthcare services and benefit a wide range of patients.
