SSYS Memorial Hospital held the 2013 Conference on Medical and Academic Development

The 2013 Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hospital (SYSH) Conference on Medical and Academic Development was successfully held at Huadu, Guangdong from August 9 to 10. All the leaders of SYSH and heads of departments have attended this conference. According to the conference report, the number of discharged inpatients and operations at SYSH has increased by 11.98 percent and 25.32 percent respectively in the first half of 2013. It indicates that SYSH is making a steady progress in both medical and academic areas.

Prof. Wang Jingfeng, vice president of SYSH, presented the key numbers of clinics in the first half of 2013 including total outpatient and inpatient numbers. According to the conference report, the total outpatient number treated at SYSH has increased by 3.26 percent to 1,070,763 in comparison to the same period of last year, while the inpatient number stands at 31,288. With the enhanced efficiency of medical service, SYSH has seen a decrease of average inpatient days by 0.47 days. At the same time, a more efficient way to fully utilize inpatient beds has been adopted.

As for the hospital’s academic development, the number of its SCI papers has increased from 48 in 2008 to 189 in 2012. Meanwhile, the total impact factor has soared from 82.5 in 2008 to 482.5 in 2012. For the first six months of 2013, the hospital’s total impact factor has already reached 398.43, according to Prof. Song Erwei, vice president of SYSH.

Four invited guests also kindly shared their experience on medical and academic development at the conference. They are Prof. Ning Guang from Ruijin Hospital of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, Prof. Feng Shen from Eastern Hepatobiliary Surgery Hospital of Second Military Medical University, Prof. Guo Yanjun from Tumor Center of the PLA Hospital and Dr. Zeng Musheng from Sun Yat-Sen University Cancer Center.

Prof. Shen Huiyong, the president of SYSH, concluded that despite of the achievements in both medical and academic areas, the hospital still has a long way to go in improving its medical service and academic research. He expressed hopes that the heads of all departments work on the quality instead of quantity and enhance each department’s core competency to better serve the patients in China.
