President Luo Jun visits Lomonosov Moscow State University, opening new phase of cooperation

At the invitation of Professor Viktor Sadovnichy, Member of the Russian Academy of Science and Rector of Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU), Professor Luo Jun, President of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU), led a delegation to visit MSU from August 31 to September 1, 2017. On behalf of SYSU, President Luo Jun signed an agreement with MSU on scientific, educational and cultural cooperation. President Luo Jun was also invited to give a speech at the opening ceremony for new students in MSU.Song Erwei, president of our hospital and Dean of Zhongshan School of Medicine, accompanied President Luo on the whole visit.

On September 1, the Knowledge Day in Russia, the opening ceremony for new students was held in the auditorium of the main building in MSU. More than 2,000 leaders, guests, teachers and students attended the opening ceremony. Rector Sadovnichy and Mr. Igor Shuvalov, First Deputy Prime Minister of Russia, and others delivered a speech successively. First Deputy Prime Minister Shuvalov said that Russian President Vladimir Putin would attend the 2017 BRICS Summit in Xiamen, and the scientific, educational and cultural exchanges between Russia and China are increasingly deepened. He hoped to strengthen cooperation and exchange with China in the next 10 years, and to build Shenzhen MSU-BIT University into a first-class university.

President Luo Jun reviewed his study visit to MSU over 20 years ago. He stressed that MSU and SYSU are influential universities in Russia and China, and the cooperation between the two universities could promote the scientific and educational cause in the two countries. He expressed congratulations to the new students in MSU and wished them a wonderful life. President Luo Jun welcomed MSU teachers and students to come to SYSU for exchange, study or work. President Luo Jun’s speech won rounds of applause from the audience.

On the afternoon of September 1, the signing ceremony of the cooperation agreement was held in the main building of MSU. On behalf of SYSU and MSU, Rector Sadovnichy and President Luo Jun jointly signed the cooperation agreement and gave a speech respectively. They emphasized that since the two universities established cooperative relations in 2000, progress has been made in many fields. The signing of this agreement marks a new chapter in the cooperation between the two universities. On the basis of existing cooperation, SYSU and MSU plan to develop long-term cooperation primarily in high performance computing, physics and astronomy, and social and economic systems of the BRICS countries, etc. Mr. Yu Jihai, Minister Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in Russia, attended the signing ceremony.

Established in 1755, the Lomonosov Moscow State University is the largest university in Russia, a world-class university with a long good tradition. Among its graduates, there are over 10 Nobel Prize winners, 6 Fields Medal winners and 1 Turing Award winner. MSU has more than 300 members of the Russian Academy of Science.

Prof. Song Erwei visited Moscow State University School of Medicine. During the meeting with Vsevolod A TKACHUK, Dean of the medical school, both sides reached an initial consensus to cooperate in the field of regenerative medicine. Furthermore, Prof. Song Erwei was invited to give a keynote speech at the Moscow Regenerative Medicine Annual Conference from November 18 to 21.
