University of British Columbia Delegates visited SYSH
On the morning of September 27, 2018, a seven-people delegation from University of British Columbia(UBC) visited Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital(SYSH) and was warmly received by the medical and research team led by Prof. PENG Ying, Director of Neurology Department and researchers of our Medical Research Center. The leaders of the visiting delegates, Dr.Brian MacVicar, Professor of Psychiatry, and Dr.Liisa Galea, Professor of Psychology were invited to give lectures surrounding the field of frontier knowledge in Neurology. Both sides carried out an in-depth academic exchange and had a heated discussion on collaboration in research and education. The event was chaired by Prof.TANG Yamei, Associate Director of Neurology Department.
At the beginning of the lecture, Pro. PENG Ying expressed his warmest welcome and gracious greeting to the delegation. He briefed the guests on the development of our hospital and Neurology Department, emphasizing the achievements made in the disciplinary construction and talent training.With large amounts of hospital assistance, the Neurology Department has developed a competitive expertise group including national outstanding scholars and researchers from overseas world-leading universities, which ensures success in its research and clinical practice. He elucidated with facts that our treatment for radiation-induced and toxic brain injuries and thrombolytic therapy for acute cerebral infarction are already on a international leading level.Moreover, the department has constantly gained support from National Natural Science Foundation of China. Recently, a National key R & D Program on prevention and control for majorchronic and noninfectious diseases with the total grants worthy of 9.72 million RMB have been granted attributing to the persistent effort of the whole staff. UBC always played a key role in the development of scientific research of Canada, mentioned by Prof. PENG, and a vision held in their research activities are strategically in line with our hospital's aim of 'striving to become a world-class research hospital'. He addressed in expectation that the way of cooperation will continue to extend in terms of connection between domestic disciplines and international disciplines, domestic hospitals and international faculties on the basis of the existing cooperation at university-level.
Dr.Brian MacVicar and Dr.Liisa Galea from UBC are giving lectures surrounding the field of frontier knowledge in Neurology.
During the lecture, Prof. Brian MacVicar mainly presented his studies on a role for brain pericytes in cerebrovascular regeneration after stroke,which reveals his recent findings of the proliferation and migration of pericytes into the infarct region following stroke, faciliating to repair and restore the cerebral microvasculature.On the other hand, Dr. Liisa Galea focused on short and long-term implications of motherhood on women’s health.She pointed out pregnancy and the postpartum period are associated with changes in neuroplasticity and cognition, and a greater risk of developing certain mental health disorders in women.The lectures provided novel ideas and innovative knowledge necessary for translation from academic theory into practice, which attracted nearly 80 audiences including researchers, professors, young doctors and medical students at the hospital. Active discussions were also carried out afterward.
Round table discussion between SYSH and UBC
In the following discussion,Prof. TANG Yamei set the tone for the exchange meeting by expecting to see advantageous resources of both sides be able to integrate with each other,so as to progress in the study of pathological mechanism of diseases related to neurodegeneration and neuropsychiatry,which will eventually facilitate the development of translational medicine and prophylactic treatment.Both parties introduced the visions of development and strong medical areas in their own institutes, which was followed by a mutual understanding on furthering talks on exploring collaboration in areas of radiation-induced brain injury, cerebral vascular repair after stroke, the impact of gender differences on precise treatment of degenerative encephalopathy and depression as well as biological specimens and animal models.

The delegation also visited the International Medical Center and the Department of Neurology. They highly commended on our modernization and advancedness and expressed the expectation of cooperating with the first Western medical hospital in China.
