Project Introduction

Bladder cancer is one of the most common malignant tumors of the urinary system in China. With high incidence and recurrence rate, it is prone to lymphatic metastasis and insensitive to chemotherapy. Clinically, there are a number of problems relating to inaccurate diagnosis and treatment of bladder cancer, including the lack of effective non-invasive diagnostic techniques, inaccurate preoperative staging diagnosis, large trauma in open surgery, and lack of treatment methods for lymphatic metastasis and chemotherapy resistance. Therefor, it is of great scientific and clinical value to carry out research on precise diagnosis and treatment of bladder cancer.

Since 2008, the team of Prof. Lin Tianxin and Prof. Huang Jian from Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University, have achieved the following breakthroughs with the support of multiple national research projects:

  1. Develop a new technology for non-invasive diagnosis of bladder cancer by examining urine sample; establish a method for immune prognosis classification of bladder cancer; achieve non-invasive diagnosis and prognosis prediction of bladder cancer; and provide a scientific support for accurate diagnosis and treatment of bladder cancer.
  2. Develop a precision diagnosis approach for lymphatic metastasis of bladder cancer, which is the first in the world; propose a new CT/MRI diagnostic standard for pelvic lymphatic metastasis of bladder cancer; develop lymphatic metastasis prediction methods based on CT, MR and gene expression; improve the accuracy of preoperative lymphatic staging , and guide the precise surgical resection range.
  3. Take the lead in establishing standardized laparoscopic radical cystectomy, and confirm that the efficacy of laparoscopic surgery for tumor root treatment is comparable to that of open surgery, with less trauma, bleeding and complications, and has advantages in preserving urinary continence and sexual function. Modify Laparoscopic Surgery for women, and establish a rapid postoperative recovery plan to promote the popularization and application of minimally invasive surgery for bladder cancer in China.
  4. Be the first to elucidate the key mechanism of lymphatic metastasis of bladder cancer, discover new therapeutic targets for blocking lymphatic metastasis, and fill the research gap of lymphatic metastasis in China. Reveal the regulatory mechanism of chemotherapy resistance in bladder cancer, identify chemosensitivity predictive markers and propose new strategies for sensitization.

Relevant research results have been published in internationally renowned journals such as Eur Urol, J Clin Invest, Nat Commun, Clin Cancer Res, etc. Among them, 16 papers have IF >10 points, and 5 papers have been selected as ESI high Cited Papers. The above-mentioned research results have been included in the Guidelines for Diagnosis and Treatment of Bladder Cancer in China, which are widely used in China and have changed the diagnosis and treatment mode of bladder cancer in our country. Relying on the South China Minimally Invasive Technology Training Center and the China Bladder Cancer Alliance, the team has promoted and applied the bladder cancer precise diagnosis and treatment technology system in more than 200 hospitals from over 30 provinces and cities in China, which has significantly improved the quality of life and survival rate of bladder cancer patients, and achieved good results in social and economic benefits.
