Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital celebrates 188th anniversary

The 188th anniversary celebration of Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University (SYSMH) was held on 6th November. To mark its centenary, the hospital carried out a series of activities to commemorate its founding since 1835. As one of China's first western-style hospitals, SYSMH upholds the philosophy of contributing to the advancement of clinical medicine and the cultivation of healthcare professionals, and achieving great successes in scientific research and development.

On the morning of 6th November, a brand new research and teaching base of the hospital - Renji Building ushered in the opening day. Song Erwei, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Director of Health Science Center of Sun Yat-sen University and President of Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital, extended his warmest welcome and heartfelt thanks to all the leaders and guests who cared for and were present to witness the inauguration of the Renji Building.

As a hospital under the supervision of the National Health Commission, we actively serves and integrates with national healthcare initiatives, and continuously improves the level of scientific research, teaching and discipline construction. Renji Building is an important initiative to expand the capacity of research and teaching venues, which also reflects the hospital's determination and confidence to vigorously develop scientific research and teaching work,” said Song.

Lan Ping, Vice President of Sun Yat-sen University, expressed his warm congratulations on the official opening of Renji Building. He acknowledged the new breakthroughs made by SYSMH in recent years. “Renji Building is a base for introducing and cultivating national high-level talents while carrying out research on immunity-related diseases and translating the results, which is a full practice of the university's basic idea of promoting the integration of science and education, and industry and education, said Lan.

He emphasized that the hospital would take the opportunity of the new building to focus on the cutting-edge technology of medicine at home and abroad, and provide the people with more accurate and high-quality medical services, and contribute to the strategy of "Healthy China" .

Renji building covers an area of 2,572 square metres with a total construction area of about 12,757 square metres. The building contains Zero Magnetism Medical Research Centre, Medical Big Data Research Centre, Medical-Industrial Integration Research Centre, as well as the base for medical teaching and research configured with corresponding laboratory zones.

The team from the Hangzhou Research Institute, part of the National Major Science and Technology Infrastructure, specializing in exceedingly feeble magnetic fields became the first co-operative unit to work with the research team of SYSMH. Fang jiancheng, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chief Scientist and Chief Designer of National Key Science and Technology Infrastructure for exceedingly feeble magnetic field signed a strategic cooperation agreement with President Song on the spot. The two medical institutions join hands to carry out basic research and applied technology research in the field of exceedingly feeble medicine, and promote the development of medical-industrial integration.

After the inauguration ceremony of Renji Building, the seminar on "100 Years of Cultivation - Passing on the Torch" hosted by Guangdong Medical Association and organised by SYSMH was held in the North Campus. More than 50 experts and guests from 24 hospitals across the country gathered together to share and exchange experiences in discipline construction and the high-quality development of public hospitals in the new era.

Yao Zhibin, President of Guangdong Medical Association, Wang Jianan, Secretary of the Second Hospital Affiliated to Zhejiang University School of Medicine, Zheng Junhua, Secretary of Renji Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine, Song Erwei, President of SYSMH, Gu Xiaohong, Secretary of the Party Committee of SYSMH, and other leaders and experts attended the conference.

As one of the 188th hospital anniversary series activities, it is also held a public hospital Party building cases exchange meeting in the afternoon of 6th November.

Gu Xiaohong, Secretary of the Party Committee of SYSMH, expressed her warmest welcome and most heartfelt thanks to the leaders and guests attending the meeting. She said that the report of the 20th Party Congress emphasized that the key to comprehensively building a modern socialist country and promoting the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation lies in the Party. Adhering to high-quality party building to lead the high-quality development of hospitals is an important mission of public hospitals in the new period, and is also a practical need to realise the strategy of "Healthy China".

The meeting invited leaders and guests representatives from the Second Hospital Affiliated to Zhejiang University School of Medicine, Renji Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, hospitals affiliated to Sun Yat-sen University, Department of Medical Sciences of Sun Yat-sen University,  counterpart hospitals of SYSMH and their hospital Party Branches. Successful cases and innovative practices of Party building leading the high-quality development of public hospitals are shared and exchanged in the meeting.

In addition, the hospital held a "Ke Lin Humanities Reading Club" unveiling ceremony. The Club was initiated by the Medical Humanities Branch of Guangdong Medical Association. Through carrying out humanities reading activities in the hospital, the staff learned from the humanistic spirit of former president Ke Lin, who save the country, love the people, and help the world with virtue and wisdom" .
