Professor Shen Huiyong of SYSU Wins the 7th Chinese Physician Award

On November 5, the award ceremony of the Seventh Chinese Physician Award was held in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. 95 physicians across the country won the award. Professor Shen Huiyong, president of Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital, also Head of Orthopedic Surgery, was on the list.

Chinese Physician Award, which is approved by the Ministry of Public Health, is the highest award for physicians audited by the State Council. The award aims to honor those who have made great contributions in their fields, and to create positive images for the contemporary physicians. It is hoped that through this award, a good medical environment will be created to value the spirit of selflessness, dedication and passion.

Professor Shen Huiyong

Prof. Shen Huiyong is specializing in spinal surgery and spinal cord injury. In the field of spinal cord injury, he has begun transplanting the olfactory ensheathing cells (OCEs) to the injured spinal cord for reparation since 2000. He is also the first person in China who applies the method of cryopreservation to preserve human embryonic olfactory ensheathing cells, which not only reduces the immunogenicity of the cells but also provides the opportunity of emergency transplantation to patients in the future.
