All-New Upgrade of SYSMH Cloud-Based Medical Museum

The Digital Virtual Medical Museum of Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital (SYSMH), supported by Sun Yat-sen University's cultural heritage initiative, has recently been upgraded. Since its launch on 4 November 2024, it has been continuously improved, now offering enriched content and a more immersive experience that takes visitors on a time-spanning journey through medical humanities.

Centered on "China's First Modern Western Hospital," the medical museum organizes nearly two centuries of records, key events, and prominent figures into over 20 independent yet interconnected "thematic time-space" modules. It explores two themes: the origins of Western medical education and the roots of China's democratic revolution. Through panoramic scenes, in-depth research, and popular-science outreach, it integrates 3D modeling, VR immersive experiences, and intelligent interaction to vividly retrace how modern Western medicine took root in China. A digital docent, "Bo Ji," offers full-time guided tours, creating a digital space that "never closes its doors."

Powered by 2.5D hybridrendering technology, this project creates a digital sand table showing its North, South and Huadu multicampus layout. After users click any campus, they are instantly directed to highdefinition 360° panoramas, where weathered historic facades and fine details of modern clinical areas come into full view for an immersive onsite experience.

Every thematic timespace module features exclusive archives, scene reconstruction and interactive functions. Nearly 1,000 rare digital resources are released to the public for the first time, including highresolution scans of BoJi Hospital annual reports, unpublished historical records, reproduced photos and figure sculptures. It brings together scattered medical heritage into a complete “digital historical timeline”. This fills the gap in systematic digital records of China’s modern Western medicine history.

Thematic Exhibition on Western Medical Textbook

“Patient Portraits Painted by Lam qua” uses high precision scanning to reproduce 86 paintings.

Through interactive technology, visitors can turn pages in real time of century-old medical books and case records in virtual display cabinets.

Guided by the Digital Virtual Docent "Boji"

After registering, visitors can customize virtual avatars and explore themed virtual spaces with unique identities for full immersion. The museum shows real-time visitor numbers and popular exhibition zones. Powered by multi-user real-time interaction, avatars can meet and chat with other guests. More than a solo exhibit, it serves as a living interactive platform for medical-cultural exchange.

Future research portals will turn static exhibits into living resources, carrying forward the ethos of "universal benevolence and relief for all" in the digital era.
