Professors of Stanford University Visit SYSH to Explore Collaboration
On March 17, 2014, Prof. Joseph Puglisi, Chair of Department of Structural Biology at Stanford University, visited Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hospital along with his wife, Ms Elisabetta Viani Puglisi, to explore possibilities of collaboration. On behalf of the hospital, Prof. Liu Qiang, Director of International Office and Deputy Director of Breast Tumor Center, and Prof. Yin Dong, Director of Medical Research Center, met with the guests from Stanford University and carried out academic exchanges on research topics of mutual interests.

Both parties shared views on recent medical and biological development, especially in the area of RNA study. Students at the hospital, who took the opportunity to communicate with the professors from Stanford University, also participated in the discussion. They have also discussed options for collaboration.
As the director of International Office, Prof. Liu Qiang introduced to the guests the general situation of Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hospital, and expressed hopes to further the communication between both institutes. “We value the chance to work with Stanford University to promote academic and scientific development.” he said.
Meanwhile, Prof. Puglisi said that he was impressed by the history and development of Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hospital, and would like the idea of furthering mutual communication. He and his wife Elisabetta Viani Puglisi, Assistant Professor of Department of Structural Biology at Stanford University, also visited the hospital’s Exhibition Room.
Prof. Jody Puglisi is a leading scientist in the study of RNA structure and function in biology. He has pioneered the use of NMR in the study of RNAs and RNA-ligand complexes. Ms Elisabetta Viani Puglisi’s research focuses on the structural and functional characterization of RNA-protein complexes involved in viral infection.
On the same date, Prof. Puglisi and Ms Puglisi visited Sun Yat-Sen University and were welcomed by Prof. Xu Ningsheng, President of Sun Yat-Sen University, and Prof. Li Mengfeng, Vice President of Sun Yat-Sen University. They had also held lectures at the East Campus and the North Campus of the university.
