Johns Hopkins Delegates Visit SYSH on SYSU-JHU Collaboration Program

On March 26, a delegation from Johns Hopkins visited Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hospital (SYSH) on a collaboration program between Sun Yat-Sen University (SYSU) and Johns Hopkins University (JHU). Prof. Shen Huiyong, President of SYSH, hosted an one-hour meeting with Mr. Sanford Wu, Managing Director of Global Services at Johns Hopkins Medicine International, to discuss possible collaboration.

Prof. Shen Huiyong, Prof. Song Erwei, Prof. Liu Qiang, and Ms Zhang Qi met with Johns Hopkins delegates. 

During the meeting, both parties carried out in-depth exchanges on the development of clinical practice, medical education, scientific research and hospital management. Prof. Shen Huiyong introduced the current situation of SYSH to the Johns Hopkins guests. He also said that the hospital would fully support the SYSU-JHU Collaboration Program and work with Johns Hopkins in areas such as residents training. Meanwhile, the Johns Hopkins representatives presented ideas for furthering the collaboration. They also consulted with the hospital’s representatives in regard to carrying out the Residents Program in Canton. 

Prof. Song Erwei, Vice President of SYSH, Prof. Liu Qiang, Director of the International Office at SYSH, Ms Zhang Qi, Deputy Director of the Office of International Cooperation and Exchange at SYSU, Mr. Chengda Zhang, Senior Associate, of Global Services at Johns Hopkins Medicine International, and Prof. Zhiping Li, Director of Hepatology at JHU, also joined the meeting.

The other Johns Hopkins delegates, including Prof. Sanjay Desai, Director of Osler Medical Training Program, Prof. Weidong Gao from Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine, Prof. Isabel Green from Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, took the opportunity to visit the the Department of Cardiology and the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics at Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hospital.

Prof. Wang Jingfeng explained a case of cardiology disease to the Johns Hopkins professors.

The delegates joined a morning meeting at the hospital’s Cardiology Department, which was hosted by Prof. Wang Jingfeng, Vice President and Party Committee Secretary of SYSH. Prof. Wang Jingfeng, Director of the Cardiology Department, presented a current case of cardiological disease to the guests, and then carried out a heated discussion on the feasible treatment with his colleagues. After the morning meeting, Prof. Sanjay Desai and Prof. Weidong Gao joined the cardiologists to mark ward rounds.

Prof. Yang Dongzi and representatives from the hospital’s Reproductive Medicine Center welcomed Prof. Isabel Green from JHU.

Meanwhile, Prof. Isabel Green paid a visit to the hospital’s Reproductive Medicine Center at the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics. Prof. Yang Dongzi, director of the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, showed Prof. Isabel Green around the medicine center and took her to the center’s lab for observation. After the department visits, the delegates from JHU also communicated with student supervisors, residents and nurses representatives at the Baiyun Hall of SYSH. At the end of the visit, they went to the Hospital’s Exhibition Room and learned about the hospital’s 179 years of history.

Since SYSU and JHU signed a cooperation agreement on clinical research in March 2013, the 2-year collaboration of stage 1 has progressed smoothly. From March 25 to March 31, 2014, the JHU delegation came to Guangzhou and carried out a series of academic activities at SYSU. The visit to SYSH, the second affiliated hospital of SYSU, was part of the activities that aimed to further the collaboration.
