Western Australia University Delegates visited SYSH
On September 15th, a delegation of five experts from University of Western Australia visited Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital (SYSH), carrying out academic exchanges with the hospital’s Department of Orthopedics and Medical Research Center. The five delegates are Prof. Minghao Zheng (Associate Dean of International Affairs at Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences), Prof. Sandra Carr (Associate Dean of Teaching and Learning at Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences), Prof. Norman Palmer (Special Projects Director of the Western Australian Neuroscience Research Institute), Prof. Steve Wilton (Director of the Western Australian Neuroscience Research Institute), and Ms Erica Yeh (Manager of Education and Learning Center at Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences).

The delegation first had a meeting with the doctors of orthopedics department in the meeting room on the 9th floor of Zhongshan Building. Prof. Wang Peng (Deputy Director of Department of Scientific Research and Deputy Director of Ankylosing Spondylitis Treatment Center), Prof. Xu Jie (Deputy Director of Joint Surgery), and Prof. Yang Rui (Deputy Director of Sports Medicine), greeted the guests. The Orthopedics experts presented their latest studies on spine surgery, joint surgery, sports medicine and other related area to the guests. As the Director of Translational Research Center of Orthopedic in Sir Charles Gardiner Hospital, Prof. Minghao Zheng also shared his latest work in Australia. He affirmed the academic achievements made by young surgeons at SYSH, and offered some useful advice on how to further the research for a higher global impact.
Later, the delegates met with Prof. Yin Dong, Director of Medical Research Center of SYSH. During the meeting, both Prof. Wilton and Prof. Yin introduced their latest research projects. Both professors showed great interests in each other’ work and agreed to keep in touch for further exchanges on basic science.
At the end, the delegates visited the hospital’s Orthopedic Ward. By talking with the doctors and nurses, they got to know about the ward’s daily work and praised the staff’s dedication to the patients. Their visit not only encourages the collaboration on scientific projects and talent training in the field of orthopedics for both parties, but also inspires the collaboration on basic research, both of which help to lay a foundation for further collaboration between University of Western Australia and Sun Yat-sen University.
