Team from Karolinska Institute School of Medicine visits SYSMH

From September 4 to 8, Professor Maria Masucci, member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and Professor Ingemar Ernberg, winner of the China International Science and Technology Cooperation Award from Karolinska Institutet, Sweden, were invited to visit Sun Yat-sen memorial hospital, Sun Yat-sen University (SYSMH).

Professor Erwei Song, Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, President of SYSMH, extended a warm welcome to the visit of the two experts. He emphasized that SYSMH and Karolinska Medical School have maintained friendly communication over the years, especially in the field of tumour immunity, and proposed strengthening interactions furthermore. The two sides expressed the hope of launching further exchanges and cooperation in the field of talent cultivation, scientific research innovation and resource sharing, etc. Prof. Masucci and Prof. Ernberg expressed their sincere gratitude for the invitation of the hospital, and reached a consensus on deepening and upgrading collaboration for projects in common fields.

Prof. Masucci and Prof. Ernberg were invited to carry out lectures on "Research on host cell remodelling by EBV replication" and "Research on complex systems resulting from regulatory interactions of complex networks in organisms and their applications in the origin of life, tumour biology and drug discovery" respectively. The lectures were followed by  a lively discussion with attendees on the issues of viral infection and immunity, tumour microenvironment, targeted therapy and individualized precision therapy.

During the period, Prof. Masucci and Prof. Ernberg paid a visit to  Biotherapeutic Technology Centre and Basic & Translational Medicine Research Centre, where they took a closer look at medical equipment and cell biology core facility, and had in-depth exchanges with our expert team. They showed SYSMH with praises on its glorious history as the first western medicine hospital in China after visiting the hospital history museum, and highly valued its contribution to modern Western medical education.

Karolinska Institutet is one of the top ten medical schools in the world and is responsible for 43% of all academic research in medicine in Sweden. Professor Maria Masucci, who focuses on viral immunity and tumour immunity, has held a number of important positions in the field of academia, including chairing and speaking on the jury of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, and membership of the European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO). Professor Ingemar Ernberg is mainly engaged in biomedical research in the field of cancer and was awarded the People's Republic of China International Science and Technology Cooperation Prize in 2006. The visit promoted a positive effect on enhancing the opportunity of academic exchanges and laid the foundation for the continued development of mutually beneficial cooperation in the future.
