SYSMH Officially Launches 'Yat-sun Health Science Popularization Guangdong Tour' Event
On April 12, Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital (SYSMH)'s "Yat-sun Health Science Popularization Guangdong Tour" kicked off at Dongguan Binhaiwan Central Hospital with a grand launch ceremony, gathering over 40 medical experts from 13 party branches. The event encompassed popular science capability training, clinical service guidance, health lectures for the people's benefit, joint free medical consultations, and popular science exhibitions. Focusing on prevention, SYSMH aimed to promote early screening、diagnosis、and treatment among communities, bringing top medical resources to the public. Experts from SYSMH imparted valuable science popularization experiences to over 40 local medical professionals, fostering their health advocates and disseminators of health knowledge.

The launching ceremony was held in the square in front of the comprehensive outpatient building of Dongguan Binhaiwan Central Hospital, attended by leaders including Liu Shidong, vice president and secretary-general of China Association for the Promotion of Ideological and Political Work in Health Care, Zhang Dekui, a fourth-level investigator of the Propaganda Department of Guangdong Provincial Health Commission, Wang Xushen, member of the Party Leadership Group and deputy director of Dongguan Health Commission, Cheng Xiaohu, director of Dongguan Humen Town Health Bureau, and others. Leaders from SYSMH, along with the management of Dongguan Binhaiwan Central Hospital, department heads, experts, and more than 100 representatives from Dongguan's local hospitals participated in the ceremony. Li Jie, the deputy secretary of the Party Committee and president of Dongguan Binhaiwan Central Hospital, presided over the ceremony.
Gu Xiaohong, the party committee secretary of SYSMH, stated that the "Yat-sun Health Science Popularization Guangdong Tour" will implement the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and the deployment of the "Hundred Counties, Thousand Towns, Ten Thousand Villages High-Quality Development Project" through practical actions. Moreover, as a tribute to the centennial anniversary of Sun Yat-sen University, this campaign will embark on a distinctive journey to promote health science through diverse activities, extending beyond Dongguan to various regions across Guangdong.
At the event, a patient, Mr. Zhang (alias), greeted Professor Shang Changzhen, party secretary of the Faculty and Staff Committee and executive deputy director of Hepatobiliary Surgery at SYSMH. "This is one of my 'old patients'!" exclaimed Shang, "We last met when I operated on him in Dongguan. Now he's recovered well and came specifically to listen to my lecture!" Mr. Zhang was hospitalized for liver cancer at Dongguan Binhaiwan Central Hospital laster year, where Professor Shang aided in diagnosis, treatment planning, and surgery.
"In the future, our urology, breast surgery, cardiology, and other national key specialty departments' Party branches will all contribute to this project. Renowned experts will be present to answer questions, take the lead in scientific popularization, channel high-quality medical resources toward the community level, and contribute to the Healthy China initiative with the power of Yat-sun" said Tang Yamei, vice president of SYSMH ,in a media interview.
Associate Professor Lin Maohuan from SYSMH reunited with alumnus Professor Huang Jianzhong, currently working in the Cardiology Department of Dongguan Binhaiwan Central Hospital. Together, they discussed cases, reminisced, and further strengthened the collaboration and ties between the two institutions. Cardiology experts from SYSMH have frequently visited the hospital for bedside rounds and surgeries. Professor Chen Yangxin, vice president of SYSMH, performed the hospital's first successful Transcatheter Edge-to-Edge Repair (TEER) surgery.
At a training session, experts from SYSMH shared insights on creating personal health science IPs, building departmental communication matrices, and making science popularization more accessible. Addtionally, the hospital upheld a people-focused approach, organizing diverse science popularization activities for locals. They has carefully selected the content and produced specialised scientific display boards.
At the 'Yat-sun Health Science Popularization Forum,' SYSMH’ experts presented lectures tailored to address public health concerns, covering liver disease prevention, gynecological health screenings, and obesity as a chronic disease risk. Furthermore, experts from Internal Medicine、Surgery、Obstetrics and Gynecology and Ophthalmology of SYSMH have visited local institutions to conduct clinical skills workshops, sharing their experience through bedside rounds, teaching, and knowledge exchange.
The medical staff from SYSMH and Dongguan Binhaiwan Central Hospital jointly held a large-scale free clinic, offering comprehensive free medical services to the public, such as on-site consultations, specialized screenings, medication advice and more, thereby bringing healthcare directly to the community.
The "Yat-sun Health Science Popularization Guangdong Tour" event (Dongguan stop) achieved remarkable success, garnering widespread praise and attention from numerous medical workers and citizens.
